A Guide to the Singapore Film Industry

Making a film isn’t easy in Singapore. Especially when you’re very new to the industry. So we’ve compiled a list of things that might help you on your way.

Equipment Rental Houses

Apart from a great idea and lots of determination, the first thing you’re going to need.. is a camera (and lights, and microphones, etc). Thankfully, we’re pretty well stocked on that front.

Film Equipment Gallery – WebsiteMap . 6338 0341

It’s the oldest rental house in Singapore. Known affectionately as FEG, expect to come here first if you’re a student filmmaker. While some of their equipment has worn the burden of time, filmmakers always get a good deal from Bala, the friendly owner. Take note to call or pop by their place, because their website is pretty outdated.

One of the first to bring in the fabled Red One, Cinegear takes a lot of pride in their equipment. Well taken care of and up to date, they’ll have everything you need and more. Just be sure to return your equipment on time, because they’re very particular about that.

Jobs

Whether you’re looking for a job to pay for your film or calling for crew to help you out, these places are sure to help.

Mandy.com – Website

The number one destination for film related jobs. Updated daily, they range from freelance productions to long term opportunities.

Farm.sg – Website

They aren’t strictly a job board, but they post plenty of job openings in the media industry.

Clubsnap.com – Website

Specifically a photography forum, but they have a semi-active film community lurking in the background.

Actors

Here’s a fact for you. 99% of all films require actors.

AADB – Website

Post an audition or browse their database, AADB is one of the best places to find actors in Singapore. You’ll need to register before you can use it though.

Casting Calls

Both The Substation and Sinema OldSchool (in the section right after this) are frequented by actors and actresses. Pop by and ask if you could put up a casting call on their noticeboard.

Indie Cinemas

Once you have a finished film, you’re probably going to need somewhere to screen it.

The Substation – Website . Map

The Substation was one of the first on the indie scene in Singapore. While they don’t specifically focus on films, they are a premier destination for local screenings.

Sinema OldSchool – Website . Map

Sinema OldSchool is a dedicated screening house for Made In Singapore productions.

Blogs

SINdieonly - Website

Written by local filmmaker Jeremy Sing, he chronicles the comings and goings of Singapore productions both here and abroad.

Festivals

Singapore International Film Festival – Website

Singapore Short Film Festival – Website

So there you have it. By no means comprehensive, but enough to get you along your way. Shout out any suggestions you may have in the comments.
